Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus (TQEC) Research Hub

Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus (TQEC) Research Hub

OVERVIEW:

The Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus (TQEC) Research Hub forms the first phase of the University of Bristol’s wider innovation campus, revitalising a post-industrial site near Bristol Temple Meads. The project centres on the sensitive reinvention of two Victorian-era structures the Retort House (1821) and the Coal Shed (1885) located in a conservation area. Design & Supply was appointed to deliver a bespoke glazing package that balanced heritage preservation with high-performance modern requirements. Recognition: Shortlisted for the Schüco Excellence Awards

CHALLENGES:

  • Complex Heritage Integration: The biggest challenge was achieving precise installation of high-performance steel glazing into curved, irregular stone openings within listed buildings.
  • Technical Compliance: Meeting demanding thermal, acoustic, structural, and visual performance standards without compromising the heritage character.
  • Bespoke Components: Custom louvres, spandrel panels, and arched glazing units were developed to align with the aesthetic and structural needs of the buildings.
  • Specialist Installation: One key feature a 3m x 2m pane weighing over 500 kg required specialist lifting solutions and detailed installation planning.

OUR SOLUTION:

  • Design & Coordination: Our team collaborated closely with architects, engineers, and conservation officers to develop a fully coordinated, performance-driven façade package.
  • External Glazing: Supplied and installed arched-head screens fabricated from Schüco Janisol HI to match original stone openings, combining heritage accuracy with modern insulation and airtightness.
  • Custom Louvres & Panels: Designed and integrated curved louvres and bespoke insulated spandrel panels to maintain the building’s industrial language.
  • Internal Glazing: Delivered a suite of internal glass partitions and fire-rated doors using the Schüco Eco 60 and Janisol 2 systems, bringing light and function into the space while maintaining acoustic and accessibility standards.

RESULTS:

  • Award Shortlist: The project has been shortlisted for the Schüco Excellence Awards, recognising the technical complexity, heritage sensitivity, and design integration.
  • Energy Performance: Achieved low U-values and high thermal performance through intelligent specification and high-quality fabrication.
  • Architectural Fidelity: Preserved the visual integrity of the original structures while bringing them into the 21st century.
  • End-User Benefit: Delivered a research space that balances industrial character with comfort, usability, and durability.

PROJECT SCOPE: External and internal glazing design, fabrication, and installation
